Sewing For the Kitchen - Tea Towels, Hot Pads and Aprons

My nephew is getting married in October!!!
Brian's fiance is adorable.
Her friends gave her a bridal shower a few weeks ago and since it was in Albuquerque about a 4 1/2 hour drive for me I decided to go.
I don't know why I am like this but I like to give things that are just a little unique and not something you can buy from the store when it comes to shower gifts.

Brian and Christine had registered on-line at several places
so I went to the sites to see what kind of style and colors they had chosen.
When I spotted this chip and dip I knew I had my inspiration!
Love all the colors and stripes on this great set!!
So off to the fabric store I went.   I found a fun stripe fabric along with other prints and a cute green polka  dot. The first thing was to cut out and make a fun apron for Christine.  Here is what I came up with.

This is my beautiful niece Bethany modeling it for me
( I couldn't  find to my camera so used Beth's when I got Albuquerque.
I even waited to wrap them till I found someone with a camera so I would be able to show to my blogging girlfriends- aren't I the best blogger!??? lol)

I gathered stips of fabric for ruffles and had a cute yellow vintage trim that worked out just right for the bottom of the apron.

A few kitchen towels and a hot pad were also assembled.
I had found some darling placemats and other items to put in the box.
I always wait till the last minute to do things like this  and didn't have time to get all my sewing done.
I have several
other projects planned still for the rest of the fabric.
I know there will be at least 1 more shower so will hopefully have them done for that one!
Christine seemed very pleased with them (or else she does a great job faking it!)
so I am happy.

So what about you?
Would you rather make something for a shower so it is more personal or do
you think it even makes a difference for the one receiving the gift?

Very cute. I too do often give something I made myself...much more personal IMO. Someone can go into a store at the last minute and pick something while handmade....personal and you always think about the person you are making it for (NOT to say I don't like or appreciate bought gifts too lol ;) )

Hugs from Marian

Love what you made! In my case everyone expects me to make them something. When I buy something I always see their disappointment so it kind of puts the pressure on me that I have to make all gifts. I love getting something handmade myself too.

Everything is so cute! I like to make things for gifts too. I don't want to buy something that other people may have already bought.

What a beautiful model - Just like her mom! (We were in her parents Sunday school class before we moved to New England this summer)

Mary,
What a cute apron!!! Love that you found fabrics that go with their choice of color palette! Not being as talented as you, my gifts are usually purchased or green..as in greenbacks! I know they will treasure your handmade gifts!
Fondly,
Pat

Lovely gift!!! I love the colors and whimsy of you gift!
I prefer to give handmade things, but I'm usually never sure if it's actually appreciated...

I know I love getting handmade gifts so I always assume that others do too. The new bride is so lucky to have received these beautiful items from you Mary!!!! The apron is absolutely darling!
I'm so glad you were able to attend the shower even at 4 1/2 hrs. Did you drive by yourself? I sometime love long trips like that, even all by myself. I usually sing all the way to the radio and arrive hoarse.

I'm so glad you are a 'good blogger' and took the photos to share : )
sending big hugs...

Love, thought and time are poured into handmade items. I would rather give a handmade gift than purchase one. The exception to that would be if the recipient were requesting certain things, like towels, pots and pans etc.

It turned out so cute, Mary!! Love it! She looks like a lovely young woman. =0)
So, I opened up another jar of jelly (one that I turned upside down like your grandma said, and some of the jelly had oozed through the lid a little and it tasted...a little funky. What did I do wrong?
I need you!!!!!!!!!!
Hope you are enjoying a cooler weekend like we are. =0)
blessings!

OH my goodness... everything looks so darn cute! It would certainly make me want to do some cooking! Although, that apron would probably fit around one thigh instead of my waist LOL

She wasn't pretending...That apron is adorable!! I like to give unique things too, I am going to give my future DIL an old metal tool box filled with crafting supplies, she has just started down the crafting lane (Hum, maybe I influenced her)so I am going to fill it with paper punches, hot glue gun, walnut ink, vintage sheet music etc. and a Joannes gift certificate

I much prefer homemade as it is comes from the heart and is much more personal. Unfortunately there are some folks who think if you haven't spent a lot of money, then you haven't really given them anything at all. The apron and kitchen accessories you sewed up are great! Hope your week is wonderful. Tammy
