August in the Garden

It has been months since we have visited my gardens. There is a reason for that. It has been so hot in Colorado that things have just been limping along. The past week or so the plants have started to look a little more lively so, though not as pretty as I would like, I thought we would take a stroll anyways.

Most people come to the back door when they come to visit. Maybe it's that wonderful arbor that my son made for me that attracts them to the back door. You can see from the picture that we are still not finished with the painting. David, our youngest son will be coming in September to help us finish it up. It has been too hot to do any painting this summer!

As you pass the arbor to the left is this little area. I moved my little gnome door and windows over here (can you see them at the base of the tree?)  A tomato is planted in the chair planter and there is a gorgeous pink rose that is peeking out to the right side of the chair back. It is a climbing David Austin rose and I hope it will cover the back tree trunk that now has Virginia creeper covering it.

I am still harvesting afew strawberries here and there. The Ship Anchor chain makes a nice border for this area. Bill's folks gave it to us when they moved back to Arizona.

On the opposite side or to the right as you pass the arbor is this little area with sunflowers, rubarb , some mums that I hope will bloom this year, and larkspur.

Last week I fixed the birdbath a bit. It just looked too plain so I took a vintage bowl and turned up upside down in the birdbath and placed one of my ceramic birds on top of it.
To keep Mikey the kitty from knocking it over and breaking it like she has so many other cuties in birdbaths I thought I would try protecting it by placing a birdcage over it.  So far so good!

Just past the birdbath is a collection of galvanized tubs that have been stacked and hold my herbs and some petunias.
My bear watches over the veggie garden which is just beyond him.  He's not doing a very good job as we have had a skunk that likes to pull tomatoes off the plants lately!
My little miniature wagon garden is in this area also-

The veggie garden has been invaded by cosmos, 4 oclocks, and sunflowers. I just can't make myself pull them all up and since they are about the only thing that is doing well they are having pretty much full rein this year!  Love this picture of the blue sky and the cosmos-my little tomato plant showing off too.
This is a view from the garden area looking out toward the arbor.   As you can tell there is still lots to do to make this garden note worthy.Next year I plan on pulling up those bricks and making the walkway wider plus making the area to the left a raised bed area.  With all the wild look of a garden I have I need to give people some walking space that will not have them smacking into plants that are growing in places they shouldn't.  I actually planned that for this year too so we will see how successful the plan becomes next year!

Mary,
What a lovely garden! Truly! Yours is still flourshing and green! Everything here has dried up and turned brown. The only exceptions are the Sunflowers that continue to bloom and my Rosemary. I fear we will "begin again" next Spring. Visiting today was like a breath of fresh air...refreshing to my soul!
Fondly,
Pat

Your garden is looking good even with our unrelenting heat! Gardeners always have plans for the next season, don't they? I'd love to have an arbor like yours-maybe my brother could build one for me!! ♥♫

Mary Ellen your garden is looking fabulous. I love your yard art and all of your great planters. This is the time of year here where nearly everything is dead. Way too hot. Hugs, Marty

Oh, I got so 'homesick' when I saw your garden! What sweet memories I have of walking there with you in May. It looks wonderful and I'm glad it survived the heat!

Thoroughly enjoyed my stroll through your garden. I can see why folks come to the back door. For some reason, I'm very reminded of showing up at my grandmother's. She had a side porch that we entered through - the arbor recalls that for me. She had this massive concrete patio out back with all kinds of plants - just like yours - makes me dream my dream a little . . . perhaps I'll turn our concrete slab into something! Or surrounded by something wonderful.
Love the boat chain and the bird/cup/cage in the bird bath - turned out quite cool.

Speaking of cool - stay cool! We're hot down here in Central Texas too.

Happy Pink Saturday!

Beautiful garden. Love what you did with the birdbath, I have a bird in mine too. My garden is struggling right now, the deer have munched a lot of my plants and we need more rain. Love your little fairy feature too! Thanks for stopping in, Laura

Your garden is beautiful! Is that a little fairy door I see peeking out from under the tree? precious!

Wish I didn't have to paint outside. I've had a couple of jobs in the sun in the upper 90's. what a killer.

You are so fortunate to have strawberries! You have to grow them just right down here in Texas or you don't get any and the sun will scortch the whole plant. I hope to get the hang of it soon.

Lovely pictures! :)
