6 Craft Room Organizing Ideas to make Crafting Easier

Last week I showed you around my creative space that I have been  working on for several months- actually more like 6 months! Okay so I'm slow!
(If you missed the post- Click Here)

I thought I would show you a few of the ways I organized my space in this post.  One of my loves is sewing and fabric.  I had a ton of fabric in cardboard or large bins with no rhyme or reason in  organizing.  First I went through and thinned out my pile considerably as many pieces of fabric I didn't find as appealing as I did years ago when purchased.  I put these in my booth and they are selling quite nicely!

I purchased 6 clear bins that had clear lids and fit perfectly under my bed.  Be sure to measure the height under your bed so that you are able to slide the bins in and out easily.  I found mine at Walmart.

I wasn't sure how best to sort my fabric- by fabric content?  Upholstery fabric, Craft fabric, clothing fabric?  I decided to sort the fabric by color. The exception to this is my barkcloth and vintage floral fabric which I stored in a cute little glass bookcase.

As you can see in this picture below these fabrics are in the red color range.  The small pieces on the right are , well, small pieces, and also mostly older vintage pieces so they got grouped together.

I didn't want to just lay the fabric in the bins and then still have to sort through each box to see the individual fabrics.  I measured the width and depth of the boxes.
Mine were  6 X 14.  I subracted about 1 1/2 inches from each measurement so the top would go on and they would slide down easily.

Each of the six boxes fit nicely under the bed and with the see through tops I can see at a glance just where the piece of fabric is that I am looking for.  So much easier then sorting through boxes and boxes of fabric and having the piece in the last box you look!
Another organizational feat was all the ribbon and laces I have- I found some strange looking contraptions at an antique store in a 10 cent box.
You can read my tutorial on how I made this ruler trim holder HERE- These are perfect for those little bits of leftover trim.
More laces and trims on the music mobile piece- Tutorial for Card holders HERE

I have a ton of ribbon on spools and organized them by color for the most part too.  They seemed perfect to make little trees out of them and display their prettiness.

Another cute find was a plastic ugly little cupboard that had potential.
After  removing the red liner paper and spray painting white I distressed the little dresser with some sandpaper on the scrolly edges.
This is the perfect size for the packages of seam binding, rick rack and the like.

Another little organizer trick that I love is my magnetic container for my straight pins.
It is actually an item my hubby sold for holding nuts and bolts while working on vehicles.
I spray painted it white and used some rub on decals to give it a little pretty.
Another little organizer is a key holder that was spray painted white
and now holds my scissors so they are easy to find and reach while working.
I hope these will give you a few ideas on how you might get your creative space a little more organized.
It is wonderful having things in a place where you can see them and use them readily!

I am excited to show you a little something I made for when I craft on the go-  you may remember that I used the old Scrabble boxes to make the lace storing cards.  Well I have an idea to show you to use the Scrabble playing board itself and I think it is a neat little idea.  Show you soon I promise!

Your crafting area looks so dreamy.
I've been reading up on Etsy and watching for tips on how to get organized to sell.
But first I have to get the *play place* organized! That means my crafting and storage areas are ...OUT.OF.WINKUS!

I loved seeing your pictures...so inspirational.
I'll be pinning this post for sure!

I must say, the makeover on that little magnetic container is fantastic! So pretty now. The only thing under my bed is dust bunnies -- it's a box spring that sits close to the ground so can't store anything there. And we don't have closets, so it's not easy finding ways to store everything here. I need to get all my paper stuff organized so I can start scrapbooking and paper crafting again. Have a fabulous day! Tammy

Your organizing ideas are great. I would be in heaven with all that fabric! Your room was one of my favorites and honestly I can't believe it only took you 6 months to put it together--it would take me years!

Mary,
Elegantly organized, dear friend! So~o~o nice to have " a place for everything...and everything in its place", my beloved Grandmother's saying as I was growing up! The storage under the bed isan excellent idea! We did something similar for Studio One...bins were purchased to go on metal storage units. The storage units are concealed behind curtains! Thanks for sharing this incredible working area in your home! May you have a blessed, creative, productive week, dear friend!
Fondly,
Pat

Great ideas! I have some fabric stored under my bed in containers like yours and I plan to get more. It's a good storage area that often goes unnoticed. You've inspired me, my friend. Again!

Very, very pretty Mary!!! You have more fabric than I do and I thought I had a lot. Makes me feel not so guilty. It is so nice to be organized and know where everything is and you seem to have mastered that in a very handy way.

M.E.,,, you are a women after my own heart...you have 'spray paint' and your not afraid to use it! lol! I luv spray painting nearly anything and everything...(that doesn't move!) haha!
I even spray paint old uber tarnished silver trays and then use orphaned jewelery to decorate the trays.

Awesome tips Mary!!! I love the hanging lace cards so much! You have such beautiful fabric! The barkcloth you have is to-die-for. I'm drooling over here.
So did you get your chokecherry syrup put up? I want to do some elderberry syrup this year, but the snakes have been so bad here that I am scared to death to go pick.
I know you know what I mean when I say that : ) I really don't want to come face-to-face with a rattler like you did. I did that twice already in my life (although I didn't get bit like you, but it is SCARY)

It hasn't been as hot here as it has been for you guys, so that has been a plus for the garden this Summer. We did have a week and a half of ninety degree temps, but now we are back into the mid-eighties, which is where I do best : )

sending big hugs...

So many things to think about and remember! I have a room that needs some more organizing as soon as I have a sale and get all the junk out that I've been storing there. Once I do that, these ideas will make a great way to add some cute organizational accents beyond what I've already done. Thanks! Found you at My Romantic Home and I'm your new follower. Hope you'll stop over and visit at Quirky Vistas and follow too if you like.

Mary,
Thanks so much for sharing these wonderful organizing ideas with us!
I particularly love the fabric in the clear tubs under the bed and how you do not have to route through all the fabric to find a particular piece.

Thanks,
Debbie

Hi Mary...

Ohhh...I just loved this post, dear friend! You certainly have found some creative ways to store your pretties! Not only is your storage functional but displayed soooo beautifully! I love how you hung your lace using the curtain rings...awesome! I just love fabric and used to be a collector...that is...when I sewed. I don't seem to do much of that these days. Anyway, thank you so much for sharing all of your creative ideas and it was such a treat to get to see your pretties!

How are you doing, dear lady? I hope that you are getting some rest. Yes...I'm sorry that it didn't work out again this year to meet. Sorry that you didn't get to go to the camp up my way but we do need to take care of ourselves or we aren't very good help to anyone. I am doing fine. Seem to be staying busy. Russ gets 4 weeks of vacation during the summer so we have been busy doing a little traveling and enjoying that. My step-son Darrin, has just moved home. He starts college soon. So I have a young one back at home. That is already keeping me hopping...hehe! Sure hope that my note is finding you well! Sending you my love and prayers!!!

Love ya,
Chari

Great tips, all, Mary,
and I look forward to
digging in to my own
space once the kids
are back in school. Even
though the are teens,
there doesn't seem to
be blocks of time for me
to get things done while
they are at home....and
I DO love having them
at home : )

Enjoy your organized and
very pretty space!!

Happy Thursday,

Hi Mary! Been wondering how you have been feeling - last I heard you were not doing so well. Hope things have improved. I'm glad summer is about over - kids go back to school in a week or so, and cross country starts Monday for Caitlin. We've had them for 2 or 3 days a week all summer - I'm getting too old to keep up (like I did 40 years ago!!!) This weekend Bob's sister is getting married, so I'm in cooking-mode today; then to LaJunta tomorrow for festivities. Maybe Monday I can enjoy my creative space. Yours looks great. Sally
