You are the Icing on my Cupcake!

When my friend decided on cupcakes for the rehearsal dinner dessert I just knew I had to make a sign that I had pinned on Pinterest.

This is the inspiration Pinterest picture.
I started out with a piece of wood.  Remember the sewing/desk remake?  Well this piece was from the top of the sewing machine that was cut to fit the desk.
First thing first- Painting it white using a can of oops paint picked up from Lowes.

Next was the time consuming part.
I am so thankful for my friend Gayle who spend a full Saturday helping me with the sign and making the darling "I Do" tags for the cupcakes.  She has a Cricut machine and just about every great crafting tool you can imagine!

We  used 3 different font cartridges to make the lettering for the sign. Sometimes the letters were cut out several times  until we got the correct size and look.   After each letter was cut we wrote on  the letter the font type and the size it was cut.   We used heavier paper board with the Cricut to cut the lettering out then after we got the saying just the  right size we had to go back and re cut each letter again in the vinyl.

Here's Gayle with her Cricut figuring out which font cartridge and size to plug in to the machine.  I am thinking the Silhouette would have been much more user friendly for this project as sometimes it was a pain having to find and then insert the cartridges and keypads for each.   She has a ton of cartridges and the first go round we used more then 3. We narrowed it down to3 basic fonts after the templates were cut and you can see some differences in the pink lettering and the final lettering.
My initial intention was to paint the wood black like the inspiration picture and then peel the vinyl lettering off  but after I had the letters in place I decided I would just keep the vinyl lettering as is.   I sanded wood to give it   weathered aged look then took my favorite stain to stain it. What is my favorite stain you ask?  Very strong black coffee!!
Kiwi Neutral shoe polish was used to give it a wonderful waxed finish and pretty look.  This is a great product to use on  small projects like this and the cost is minimal.

And here it is

It was a sweet addition to the cupcake table and I thing a gift that the couple will enjoy for years to come-

I signed the piece on the back wishing that they will always be the icing on each other's cupcake-

That is a great gift! I'm always at a loss figuring out something for wedding gifts that don't cost a fortune! Right now I'm working on a small patchwork table topper for a friend getting married in Peru. It's been busy around here since school has been out. We have had the grandkids a lot. Caitlin & I just finished making her a sundress, and she & I have been baking -- we have fellowship hour at church tomorrow. Also, Mike has been home for 5 days - lots of cooking going on. Enjoy the week. Sally

That is adorable! I would love a cricut, it does so many cute things! Yep, I pull out the shoe polish for small projects too...So funny, us crafters think alike! You mentioned linen was a good seller for you, I actually usually pay my booth rental with the linen sales

Hi Mary!

This sign is adorable! The combination of the three fonts gives it so much character. It sounds like it was very time consuming but definitely worth it in the end!

I never thought about shoe polish to use as a wax! Fun tip!

Do you have any trouble getting your vinyl to adhere to painted wood? Mine always slides around and drives me crazy.
